Jordi Gomez sets Europa league record for longest range goal

It’s not everyday you get to see a record smashed in just over week, When Kemar Roofe set a Europa League record for the longest-range goal in the competition’s history last week, he probably thought it would stand for some time.

Well, it actually lasted 7 days.

Roofe’s goal for Rangers from just inside his half was a beauty of a strike but it was bettered on Thursday by ex-Wigan midfielder Jordi Gomez.

The 35-year-old, who now plays for Omonia Nicosia of Cyprus, rolled back the years against Dutch side PSV Eindhoven, launching a free-kick from inside his own half over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

Gomez’s goal was scored from 61.2 yards, eclipsing Roofe’s effort from 55.4 yards.

While Roofe’s goal helped Rangers to a 2-0 win against Standard Liege, Gomez’s was only a consolation as his side lost 2-1.

Gomez’s goal has caused some debate on social media, with some people claiming it should not have stood because the ball appeared to be moving when he hit it.

Not to worry, someone will probably break the record again next week…
